Ask a Big Ed!

This is it! The day has arrived. Piss off "Dear Abby"...there is a new gun in town. We here at "What the Hell is a Gorlok" want our dear followers to know we care, and to prove that, we created this blog to be your voice and now...we want to be like your crazy older brother. Ya' know, the one that only went to college for 3 years, bartends and is shacked up with some girl he met at Pops over on the east side. This is the brother that gives good advice, yet he does not practice what he preaches. This is the same brother that Grandma always refers to as the "late bloomer." That's pretty much how we are going to roll with this post and the next 2 to follow. We are going to be that "late blooming" brother, and answer any questions you might have regarding Webster Advertising and/or the School of Communications. These questions are real and we promise you, the answers will be as well. Webster is about individualism, the forces that be must accept that and let the knowledge here at WTHIAG be heard!! And now...the first question:

What has been the most beneficial advertising class you have taken at Webster and why?

Whoa. Easy there tiger. A pretty broad question for a school that has a pretty broad advertising program. It's hard for me to focus on one individual class. I have enjoyed certain professors and the class they have taught. My advisor has made sure to give me an advertising onslaught of classes to make my ADVT knowledge come full circle. With that being said, I like the classes that push creativity, that push your mind and push your buttons. If your not getting pissed off during a semester you are not learning. Good educators push your buttons and I have had my buttons pushed plenty here at WU (er..wait, did that sound weird?).

So I say, "Push on WU ADVT professors...Push on!"

And if you are in the ADVT program and are a whining Lil' Oprah hugger, buck up... or transfer to UMSL and become a Poly Sci major.

New Semester...New Classes...New Decade!?

I hope everyone had a fantastic break! I know I did...it could have been a little bit longer though! Share some of the fun shenanigans you got into on your Facebook fan page or just comment!

I hope everyone had a great first week back. I, myself, am working to get back into the swing of things and the first way I thought of was by posting on our beloved blog! Which got me thinking, how do you, yes you, the one reading this right now, how do you get back into the swing of things when a new semester begins? I am in need of ways because frankly, I don't really have one and having one...or more...would probably benefit me in the long run!

Upcoming events you ask? The Gorloks have a double header on Saturday against...*checking calendar*...Westminster at 1 and 3 at Grant Gym. So be there! I don't want to hear any excuses about having to work *cough* Fitzpatrick *cough*!

We're Back!

Hello all you Webster folk.

Hope your holidays were swell. Mine were super, thanks for your concern (I totally know you were thinking if my holidays were pleasant).

So...for many of us, this is our last semester as a Gorlok, aka- Big Ed (Que awesome montage that features tearful good-bye music and pictures of us in our days at Webster. Awwwww!)

I want this last semester to be fun, rewarding, and mischievous. If you have any concerns, questions or ideas...post them on our Facebook page...I nominate myself to be the "Dear Abby" of Webster University. You can address those questions, ideas and/or concerns to "Dear Nicky!"

I know some of you don't care what a Gorlok is, but for Pete's sake, don't get so angry that you toss literature about the Gorlok in the parking lot; only to let the literature get rained on and raped by car tires. This picture made me seethe with anger (is seethe a word? i don't have time to google it). This picture was taken on the first day back spring semester 2010, next to the UC. A reward is being offered by us here at What The Hell is a Gorlok if anyone knows any info regarding the persons who threw this literature on the ground. The reward will consist of a high-five from all of us here, and a passionate hug from Matt "fitty" Fitzger...er.... Fitzpat...er...Fitz-something. I might throw in a 6-pack of PBR too! (Disclaimer: Must be 21 years of age to get PBR prize...not a year younger...nor a year older...must be exactly 21!)

Our Little Uni Just Grew a Bit

The big news this past week is that Webster is growing. Webster University acquired five acres from Eden Seminary, as well as the Wherli Center, The Luhr Library, and the “White House”. Obama was not available for comment.


The first thing that comes to mind is more parking. When I realized this I began to dance around my apartment with an unthwarted glee. But looking at its location, it’s not really gonna help that problem. The only way that could happen is if we acquired Narix. Which I’m all for, cause I almost hit a schoolgirl every day (I know, I should gas it, they’re worth 50 points, but still…).


But then, I read this: “The University will also lease Eden's athletic fields for recreation and intramural sports for seven years”. I really hope they sink some money into the fields, because sports are a great way to bring a school together. But having to drive to other fields for soccer and freakin Illinois for baseball really hurts the team. If we played just a walk across Lockwood, it could really improve the student attendance at the games.

Latent Image, the photography club at Webster University, will be holding a 2 day print sale to raise money for its spring semester. Come out to browse and buy photographic prints from students and staff at Webster. These prints will make great holiday presents.

University Center Common Area

Tuesday December 15th from 11am to 7pm.
Wednesday December 16th from 11am to 7pm.

The average price of the prints should be about $20. All prints will be approximately 8x10 or 11x14 and matted.

I think it’s a great idea. You’re doing a little holiday shopping and supporting Webster photography students. You’ve seen their work all over campus—and if I don’t say so myself their work always looks hella’ good.

This is it! Last week of the semester and is it ever so stressful. Good thing there’s Zumba classes and FREE massages AND food! I said it.. Zumba! Massages! Food!

Now.. I’m not exactly sure what Zumba exercising is, but it sounds awesome. The name alone makes me want to go.

So kids.. take a breather--- Webster is helping ya’ out and trying to make life a little less stressful during this hell week. Hopefully you heard about this sooner so you get a good time for a free massage.

Totally Stoked this semester is at an end,

also stoked that we made you as a friend.

So this holiday we want to bring the cheer,

if you see your boy St. Nick, I know he digs beer.

(That's my cute Xmas way of saying, since my name is Nick, you can give me beer as an Xmas gift. Or Hanukkah gift. Kwanzaa gift. Holiday gift. You might not even know me, so then mentally "wish" me a beer for Xmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa/Holiday....gotta stay PC during these festive times).

This is kind of a big deal.. for seniors at least.

With everything going on it’s hard to remember all the little stuff you need to do in order to graduate. Of course, making an appointment with your advisor is always a good start.

If you’re a senior you totally need to make a list of “things to do so I can get outta’ here!”

On my list I have:

Internship credit
Internship approval—I think there’s some paper work Webster needs in order to give you credit.
Appointment with advisor— to make sure I have all required classes and fulfilled categories 1, 2, and 3. My advisor is the bomb, but I am so paranoid about graduating on time and making sure everything is okay that I make 23409234 appointments with him.. I take up quite a portion of his time, but it’s better to be safe than sorry!
Books (sigh.. so much $) then remembering to return them (yay! I get ¼ of the money back I spent on the books?! Pshh! )
My credit hours from other schools—to make sure they transfer over smoothly, certainly don’t want any last minute problems jeopardizing my graduation!

A Tribute to Weber's Front Row

Every college has it. Mizzou has Trop’s. Missouri State has Trolly’s. And Webster has the smoke filled, dart holes on the wall bar that is Weber's Front Row. Located right by the university, this bar is an escape from the tai/ pottery / organic / Whole Foods style that is Webster Groves. They are pure and simply a bar. The food is bathed in grease, the TV has sports on all the time, and the beer list is simple, and cheap. Might as well be called Moe’s. 

But the thing with this bar is has Webster students in it almost every night. And it’s not the Communication schools bar, or the Business Schools bar, or the Conservatory bar. Its everyone’s bar. And with finals going on right now, it’s bound to have everyone in there come Thursday. 

So, crack open a Bud Light, Weber’s Bar and Grill. Because, with the size of this university, it’s either Weber’s, or sobriety.

Today we salute you stressed out college student during exam week.

As you sit in your lonely cubical in the library, doped up on Starbucks & Adderal, you think to yourself, am I ever going to need to know this stuff in life? The distractions are tempting and you have suddenly diagnosed yourself with ADD along with advanced delusionary schizophrenia with involuntary narcissistic rage. I'm sure by now you know exactly what everyone is doing because you have checked Facebook 800 times. Christmas break is just days away, and your Prozac prescription will be in tomorrow. So crack open an ice cold Bud Light after that last exam, because for most of us, Christmas will be spent in rehab.

Twas the Night Before Finals

Twas the night before finals, and all through the college,
The students were praying for last minute knowledge.
Most were quite sleepy, but none touched their beds,
While visions of essays danced in their heads.

Out in the taverns, a few were still drinking,
And hoping that liquor would loosen up their thinking.
In my own apartment, I had been pacing,
And dreading exams I soon would be facing.

My roommate was speechless, his nose in his books,
And my comments to him drew unfriendly looks.
I drained all the coffee, and brewed a new pot,
No longer caring that my nerves were shot.

I stared at my notes, but my thoughts were muddy,
My eyes went a blur, I just couldn't study.
"Some pizza might help," I said with a shiver,
But each place I called refused to deliver.

I'd nearly concluded that life was too cruel,
With futures depending on grades had in school.
When all of a sudden, our door opened wide,
And Patron Saint Put-It-Off ambled inside.

His spirit was careless, his manner was mellow,
When all of a sudden, he started to bellow:
"On Cliff Notes! On Crib Notes! On last year's exams!
On Wingit and Slingit, and last minute crams!"

His message delivered, he vanished from sight,
But we heard him laughing outside in the night.
"Your teachers have pegged you, so just do your best.
Happy Finals to all, and to all, a Good Test!"

To conclude this note, the Gorloks have a busy weekend in basketball. Starting on Friday at 8, the men will take on Maryville. On Saturday, The men will play at 2 or 4 (that is still up in the air) and the women will play at 6.

3rd Annual World AIDS Day

Tonight at 8PM in Webster University's UC Sunnen Lounge is the 3rd Annual World AIDS Day Concert featuring Andrea Gibson, Julie Schurr, The Illphonics and C. Jay Conrod.

The concert itself is free and all donations collected will be given to amFar, the American Foundation for AIDS Research.

To accompany the great entertainment, there will be informational booths from The Names Project, Williams & Associates, Project ARK, LGBT Community Center of St. Louis, and Faith Aloud!

Project ARK will be doing free HIV/AIDS testing through out the entire concert in the UC Presentation Room! It's swab testing, not needles! There will be sweet prizes from Starbucks and more for those who participate.

So come out, get tested, and enjoy the music!

The Displaced Student Section of Webster University

Anyone who has been to one of Webster's basketball or Volleyball games know that the crowd, while smaller, can get very loud. And aggressive. And crazy. It was cool to see some increased support for this Wednesday's game. With the Webster True Blue t-shirts being handed out, it looks like a true student cheering group is starting up again (R.I.P. WuCrew). It's a start, but it still ain't perfect, and in my opinion, we're missing one vital thing.


Me and the rest of the "vocal" part of the crowd (Greeks, WuCrew decedents, and the triple threat of sports knowledge at Webster, Andy Houchin Jeremy Clements, and Bryce Johnson) were doing what the fans do at other colleges; standing, cheering, and taunting the jerks on the other team that look like Zak Effron. And we did this the whole time. Admittedly, this could be annoying to anyone sitting in back of us, or to parents just there to see their kid play and whatnot, and we understand this. Before the game, we made our intentions known, and graciously give up seats or tried to move as not to interrupt these fans. We're all here to have fun after all. (Thanks to the announcements by one Liz Eisley, we were reminded to practice SPORTSMANSHIP... SPORTSMANSHIP... SPORTSMANSHIP... MAN STUFF... MAN STUFF...) But still, throughout the game, we still have to move out of the way, adjusting, and trying to keep the complaints down.


This got me thinking, what is the best way to make this a fun time for all. It's really an easy solution, and in place at many campus's (campui?...Campesses?). A dedicated student section. Only students and Alum allowed. There was an attempt at it on Wednesday, but it was just a sign. Parents and other people were allowed in, which created a mess. All we need is a set of seats reserved for us to be loud and crazy without interrupting other fans enjoyment. To Take a page from Nick Bankhead, I have illustrated this principal....

As you can see, a little separation between fans creates a fun time for everyone. And, it creates a louder student section. For example, there were three freshman sitting in front of us, and never seeing a Webster basketball game, were a little lost as to where to sit and what to do. And rightfully so, as with everyone mixed up, there was no unified section to join. We invited them up, they cheered and had a crazy good time. What would happen if EVERY student joined us. A true group of True Blue fans. 


Finally, one more reason. For the first half of the womens game, the Webster fans were separated sparse, and un-unified. Because of that, we were out-cheered by two "My New Haircut" Blackburn fans. 2 FANS. Outcheering us in our house. Of course, when everyone finally got together, they were booed out of the place, but that just shouldn't happen!

So, this past Monday I was walking outta Sverdrup and headed to the Library. Yes, I know...not many steps, but I became stoked when I noticed what was going on outside in-between the Library and Sverdrup. These 3 dudes were just kicking the soccer ball around and laughing. They were kicking it Hackey-Sack stlyle and enjoying themselves immensely. I knew I had to catch the moment on paper. So I sat down and drew the scene. I love a school where people can kick soccer balls freely....I wish the rest of the world could relate! Go Big-Ed's!

THE FIRST DOUBLE HEADER IS WEDNESDAY NIGHT! Get excited! I know I am!!

They will be taking on the Blackburn Beavers at Grant Gymnasium! Women's game is at 6 and the Men follow at 8. The Student Alumni Association will be providing hot apple cider, hot chocolate, and donuts starrting at 5:30 in the Athletic Commons. They will continue to be provided until we run out!! There will be also handouts and other fun stuff!!! I don't know about the rest of you, but if there is a t-shirt you can bet your sweet patooty that I'll be stopping by.

Danceline will be performing at both half times, the cheerleaders will be there, and the WU Crue and DU will be making their first appearance of the season...also, in support of AIDS Week, the cheerleaders will be wearing a red accent...and we encourage you to do the same. Not too much though since it is the same color as Blackburn!!

So get your derrier out of your charier...yeah I said it...get your navy and gold apparel and come out to support the Gorloks!!!!! See you all then!!!!!!!!!!!

{title of show}

{title of show} is a musical about two song writers trying to write a musical about two song writers trying to make it in New York. That may sound confusing, but it truly is a great show! Music and lyrics are by Jeff Bowen and the book was written by Hunter Bell who is graduate of Webster University. The show has four characters in it. Two men and two women. They are Jeff, Hunter, Susan, and Heidi.

The show will take place in the Studio Theatre from January 13-31. The shows run at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesdays, 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays and 2:00 and 7:00 p.m. on Sundays. This show is definitely recommended for college students, so be sure and show your student ID for a discount. You can call 314-968-4925 or log onto www.repstl.org to buy tickets. This show is a comedy and is sure to be a hit. You won't want to miss it!

First, I would like to comment on the success of WTHIAG's fan page on Facebook...244 fans!? That's awesome! Thanks to all of you who have taken the time out of your busy day to check out our little blogs...on a side note, thanks also for giving me something to do on Facebook when my FarmVille crops are not yet done growing...

B) The kickoff to the first double header of the Gorlok basketball season is NEXT WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 2ND! The women will play at 6 and then the men will continue at 8. They will be taking on the Blackburn Beavers! There will be hot chocolate and apple cider...ya know...until we run out and then you're on your own. There will also be free giveaways and other fun stuff! I don't know about you, but if there is a free t-shirt, you can always count me in...as long as it is legal and doesn't involve needles. Third, as I am sitting here on this November evening, I can't help but think about all the work that needs to be done in the coming weeks...and being in full procrastination mode. No literally, I am. I am doing this to procrastinate on another homework assignment which I will start after I finish this blog...and get a sandwich. I am wondering what is everyone else's favorite way to procrastinate? Facebook doesn't count because everyone does it! Do you get your oil changed? Give your dogs a bath because just today you realized how bad they smelled? Do you clean your room because you just happened to notice how disgusting it is and you absolutely cannot work in a space that is as cluttered as that? Do you go to a Webster University basketball game? Please share...and if you have a cure for the common procrastinator, please share that with us so that we can help those who are also impaired by this condition...because it is fun until you have realized that you have 20 mins before class to get it done and you know you're not...

Finally, I would like to wish you all a happy Thanksgiving and comment on my sister's snoring that is so loud my neighbors just called to complain. This is mainly because the brat would not join WTHIAG.
